Knowing Your Symptoms

Feb 6, 2020

Do you know your symptoms?

For a couple weeks recently I was completely disoriented and discombobulated. My energy was drained. It was as if I was underwater and couldn’t find my way to the top. I couldn’t figure out what was going on.

Then I got sick — so sick I couldn’t get out of bed for 24 hours. I haven’t been sick like that in almost a decade. My body decided to make me sit still so I could reflect.

I was discussing it with a therapist friend of mine and she said, “Yay! Now that you know your symptoms, remember them so next time you’ll realize when you’re in dissonant energy. Knowing your symptoms can be a wakeup call when we are so deep in it that we don’t know what’s happening.”

She also told me to tell my friends about my symptoms so they’d be able to recognize them when I couldn’t. This was one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten.

Sometimes unhealed trauma keeps us fuzzy. We get stuck repeating old patterns and we’re so deep in it we don’t even realize it. But if we know how our symptoms of distress manifest, we can identify when we’re in a situation that’s draining our energy.

When we become aware, we have the power to shift it.

Now I know that my symptoms are extended periods of confusion, talking to others about drama and feeling drained.

What are your symptoms?
